Colorado SSF Law Starts August 1, 2026 | Specified Semiautomatic Firearms

Colorado’s New Specified Semiautomatic Firearm Law Takes Effect August 1, 2026

What Colorado gun owners need to know before buying certain semiautomatic firearms after the new law begins.

What Changes with the Colorado SSF law on August 1, 2026?

Beginning August 1, 2026, Colorado’s new Specified Semiautomatic Firearm law changes the purchasing process for certain semiautomatic firearms.

The law does not make every semiautomatic firearm illegal, and it does not automatically affect every firearm a person already owns.

The biggest change is that many future purchases and transfers will require additional steps before the firearm can be lawfully transferred.

The Law Does Not Ban Existing Firearms

One of the biggest misunderstandings is that the new law makes currently owned firearms illegal. That is not what the law does.

If you legally owned a firearm before the effective date, the law generally does not require you to surrender it, register it, or complete additional training simply because you already own it.

The new requirements primarily apply to future purchases and transfers of firearms that meet Colorado’s definition of a Specified Semiautomatic Firearm.

What Is a Specified Semiautomatic Firearm?

A Specified Semiautomatic Firearm, often shortened to SSF, is a firearm that meets Colorado’s legal definition under the new law.

In general terms, the law affects many semiautomatic rifles and some semiautomatic pistols that use detachable magazines. However, not every semiautomatic firearm is included.

There are important exemptions and definitions that matter. Gun owners should not assume a firearm is covered or exempt without checking the actual requirements.

Who Needs the 4-Hour or 12-Hour Firearms Safety Course?

Depending on the buyer’s background, Colorado SSF law may require either a 4-hour firearms safety course or a 12-hour firearms safety course before purchase or transfer.

In general, the shorter course applies to people who already have qualifying hunter education credentials. The longer course applies to buyers who do not meet that requirement.

Both courses are intended to cover firearm safety, Colorado law, responsible ownership, and the written testing required under the new program.

What the Required Course Covers

The new firearms safety courses are separate from Colorado concealed carry permit classes.

Course topics are expected to include:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Secure firearm storage
  • Colorado firearm laws
  • Responsible firearm ownership
  • Safe transportation
  • Conflict avoidance
  • Written examination

Common Firearms That May Not Be Covered

Several firearm types are not normally part of the new Colorado SSF law purchasing process.

Depending on the specific firearm, exemptions may include:

  • Bolt-action rifles
  • Lever-action rifles
  • Pump-action firearms
  • Revolvers
  • Some rimfire firearms
  • Other firearms specifically excluded under Colorado law

The exact firearm configuration matters. A small design difference can change whether the new law applies.
